One of the West's Iconic Landmark  Stopovers: Al's Oasis, A Generational South Dakota Landmark 

Travelers westbound on I-90 near Chamberlain, South Dakota Al's Oasis can be seen across the bridge spanning the Missouri River standing on rolling prairie . Its history dates back to 1919 when Albert Mueller immigrated from Germany later establishing a grocery store. By 1960, Al's Oasis was born fast becoming a favorite for family vacationers, and locals alike, including the author who frequented the homey atmosphere while living nearby. Signature five-cent coffee and scrumptious homemade pies make this a mainstay iconic  landmark. 

Al's Oasis has grown from its original twelve-seat lunch counter to dozens of employees serving thousands each  year. A full breakfast and lunch menu that includes a wide-range of supper items, and their world-famous Buffalo Burgers. Nearby, Al's Oasis hosts overnight guests at their motel, with gift shop and grocery store, and a river-side campground.   

Today the original family continues to own and run the restaurant that includes, Steve Mueller and brother Mark Mueller. A ​generational legacy that is one of the best stopovers in the west.
